For someone who avoids horror as a genre generally, I really enjoyed this movie. So I would like to begin with a heartfelt apology to my wonderful partner for not watching it the same time it was recommended. That is truly and honestly my bad. Let me make it up by giving details of what made this film enjoyable to me (and what did not).
Firstly, I love how the film immerses you in the story right from the get go. It is a nod to 90s slasher films done right. It does not poke fun at the tropes but rather takes itself seriously as a medium for storytelling while still managing to land very comedic moments. The film wastes no time on unnecessary buildup and trusts the audience to follow the story fron being dropped into it. I found that refreshing. No time wasted. No unnecessary filler jokes, no poking fun at its own medium, you are just put in the story and it is expected that you have a fun time and understand as it progresses.
Secondly, and most importantly, the characters. From the introduction of Maya Hawke’s Heather, who I thought would be filling a major role btwðŸ˜, to our main characters. The five of them were all odd and weird in their own ways and that made them charming to me. I loved Kate most of all. She was beautiful, fearless, and a woman of many talents. I mean look at the material! My heart broke when she died. She did NOT need to. And Simon😔 that lovable goofball. Sigh. Very interesting villain though. I would love to see more about her in the other two films.
I enjoyed the director’s use of cliches in the film too. There weren’t over the top neither were they subtle. She managed to set a good balance. I love how the movie avoided the omniscient nerd trope with Josh. Even though he knew a lot about the murders and their connection to the witch, it does not translate to knowing how to stop it. And the film illustrated that very well.
I also enjoyed the teaser for Part 2 and look forward to being able to watch that. I really want to know how Deena, Sam and Josh will figure out how to handle the witch.
So all in all I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Thank you so much for recommending babe. I love you and promise to do better.
